1999 – When It All Began!

One might say that Mardi Gras in Acadiana went to the dogs in 1999 when the Krewe des Chiens made it’s debut with a K-9 parade and charitable ball!  The concept was based on the New Orleans “Krewe of Barkus” which had been celebrating for seven years and donating proceeds to the Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

The Dog Parade was held on February 13th on the grounds of Acadiana Mall and the People Ball was held on February 14th inside the Mall with entertainment by the Andy Smith Band.

“Our overall goal is to heighten awareness that there are animals in Acadiana that are not receiving the best care that they can be receiving,” said Dr. Andy Plauché of the Acadiana Area Veterinary Association.  “Hopefully this event will generate funds to support the groups that are striving to help out with the adoption of these pets.”

The highlight of this first event was the auctioning to a good home of King Gumbo & Queen Filé, two stray dogs adopted from the Lafayette Animal Control Center.  The winning bid for Queen Filé was $450 and $850 for King Gumbo!
